Abstract

To elucidate alteration of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets in the patients with digestive cancer, the author analyzed T cell subsets with anti-Leu 4, anti-Leu 3a, anti-Leu 2a, anti-Leu 8 and anti-Leu 15 monoclonal antibodies using two-color
flow
cytometry in 38 cases of digestive cancer including 17 cases of stomach cancer, 12 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and 9 cases of colorectal cancer as well as 18 cases of adult healthy subjects as control.
Diagnoses were confirmed histopathologically in all patients. All blood samples were obtained from veins of the patients and control subjects in Pusan National University Hospital during the period of January to September. 1992.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. The percentage and absolute number of CD3+ cells were significantly decreased or tended to be decreased in patients with digestive cancer as compared with adult healthy subjects.
2. The percentage and absolute number of CD4+ cells were significantly decreased or tended to be decrease in patients with digestive cancer as compared with adult healthy subjects.
3. The percentage and absolute number of Leu 3a+++ Leu 8+ cells were significantly decreased or tended to be decreased in patients with digestive cancer as compared with adult healthy subjects.
4. The percentage and absolute number of Leu 3a+ Leu 8+ cells showed no significant differences between patients with digestive cancer and adult healthy subjects.
5. The percentage ad absolute number of Leu 2a ++ Leu 15+ cells were significantly decreased or tended to be decreased in patients with digestive caner as compared with adult healthy subjects.
6. The absolute number of Leu 2a+ Leu15+ cells was significantly decreased or tended to be decreased in patients with digestive cancer as compared with adult healthy subjects.
From these results above, it is suggested that decreased of suppressor inducer T cells (Leu3a+ Leu8+) and cytotoxic T cells (Leu2a+ Leu15+) have a role in cellular immunodeficiency of digestive cancer patients.
